WIXII-ISM™ FROM HILARY BLAIR:
I’m…careful of the voices that I listen to. I question more. I trust gut more.
Meet our featured Wixii™, Hilary Blair. She is in her early 50’s and mother to 3 fabulous rescue dogs. She currently CEO and lead articulator for the communication company she cofounded: ARTiculate: Real & Clear.
She rides a unicycle and she’s the voice of the planetarium show at the museum of nature and science.
HILARY’S CAREER PATH:
Always teaching, always acting – until, as a tomato I was spotted by a business woman who suggested I work with business folks – while not dressed as a tomato. That one exchange changed my trajectory of working in theatre and education to co-founding a business coaching business professionals using theatre.
HILARY’S MINDSET AND WORK-LIFE MIX:
Wow! Lots of life to live so let’s be living it now! Work hard, remember to play hard too. Love what I do, so it works!
Work: how do you “think outside the box” with respect to your work-life potential and opportunities?
I have been outside the box as an actor working with business folks – and I tried to get in the box so as to connect and not be too scary as the artist type. And I learned a lot in there. Things that have helped me and ARTiculate grow. Now, I’m like jump on out – and I invite our clients to join us. Let’s use these awesome art and amazing theatre to get voices and stories heard and to build confidence. Because it works. And I do keep wiggling a bit – every time the allure of the box comes back, I wiggle, throw myself off balance and keep exploring outside.
House: how do you maintain order/status quo and/or how do you “manage it all” just a bit better?
Surround myself with an amazing team!
Self: how do you strengthen your own identity and not lose yourself in the mix?
Constant weeding of my mind garden – weeds pop up all the time. Gotta get rid of them and be clear on what I want growing there.
How does your current mindset/attitude empower and/or frustrate your ability to thrive in your work-life mix? How has your mindset/attitude toward life changed over time?
I have learned that discipline and routine are fantastic and do not show a lack of creativity! Honestly, the best thing I’ve done is look around at all the weird advice I’ve been given, check the source and see if is really serving me – if not – jettison! I wish I had started this much younger. It’s so odd the advice that has stuck through the years. Some good but some just plain useless or dare I say, destructive. I’m more careful of the voices that I listen to. I question more. I trust gut more.
Please share your favorite efficiencies and timesavers.
Are there changes your workplace or you could make to better manage your work-life mix?
Ha!! Constantly working on that!
What advice would you give an earlier version of yourself?
Don’t listen to the naysayers. Business folks are not freaks – they are really cool. And many of them are phenomenally productive and doing amazing things in the world. They have a discipline and focus to be admired and modeled. There are brilliant teachers and mentors ready to guide you in this business realm. Seek and ask and put in the time and energy. And honestly, who told you lists were bad? And routine? Get over it already, and get going. There is a lot to be done in this world! Game on!
