I don’t know about in your house, but my sons find the mention of the word “school” not just impolite, but simply bordering on unkind, anytime during the summer. So, imagine my utter surprise each summer, when I mention that we need to think about school supplies for the upcoming school year, they each beg to shop for their supplies. Yes, they are actually excited to pick out all their new stuff. Now, maybe it is the little consumers in them, or the freshness of new supplies that excites them, but either way, I have found it makes a fun and educational summer activity.
My boys have become quite adept at comparing brands, reading labels and pricing their options. I have set them up with a clipboard and pencil to mark off as they place an item in our shopping cart. We have even made a competition to see who can save the most money in total for their list of supplies compared to the cost of the prepackaged supply kits sold by their school. The savings is considerable and the supplies generally are more to their personal style and color preferences.
