WIXII-ISM™ FROM TERESA TAYLOR:

I created my own anxiety, frustration and disappointment by searching for the mythical “balance.”  I was searching for a “balance” that was not defined by me, but by others.  Once I set my own definition, I was much happier and I wish I would have discovered that formula earlier in life!!

TERESA’S STORY:

Meet our featured Wixii™, Teresa Taylor.  She is 50 and mother to two sons 18 and 20 years old. She has a BS and completed numerous graduate programs.  She currently CEO of Blue Valley Advisors in the management industry.

A fun fact about Teresa is that she loves to cook.

TERESA’S CAREER PATH:

I started my career in telecommunications in a pure commission sales position with start-up companies. I then joined US West/Qwest and held almost every position available for the next 22 years, except finance or legal!  I ended my fabulous career at Qwest as the Chief Operating Officer. I now am the CEO of Blue Valley Advisors where I advise companies and I serve on the board of directors for three large public companies. During this time, I stayed married to the same man and raised two sons.

TERESA’S MINDSET AND WORK-LIFE MIX:

I wake up every day thankful and pinch myself!  We cannot control what happens each day, but we can control how we respond to it. I choose to live and be present and whatever I am doing.  I used to be a perfectionist, but I have learned to lighten up on that, especially in my expectations of others!

I am a planner and set time limits to my daily activities.  If I allocate an hour to something, and then I don’t finish – I walk away.  That means stopping and coming back to it another time or just accepting that it was the best that I can do.  This applies to home and work activities

House:  how do you maintain order/status quo and/or how do you “manage it all” just a bit better?

I manage it all by combining my work and home life. I don’t keep my worlds distinct, but rather integrate them into one.  My tool for this is one calendar.  This allows me to look at a day, week or month and make conscious choices. Then, I don’t renegotiate with myself. If I choose to be at one of my kids school events rather than a work event, then I give it all I have and don’t wish I was somewhere else. Don’t take the mother out of the career woman or the career woman out of the mother. Be yourself

Please share specific tips for effectively managing your time and schedule.

1.Combine your work and family schedules – look at the big picture and make conscious choices.

2. Make numerous short lists rather than one large list – allows you to prioritize and cross things off  (success).

3. Assign time limits to your activities – stop and walk away.

4. Stay in the moment – be present where you are, give it all you have and don’t wish you were somewhere else.

What advice would you give an earlier version of yourself?

I created my own anxiety, frustration and disappointment by searching for the mythical “balance.”  I was searching for a “balance” that was not defined by me, but by others.  Once I set my own definition, I was much happier and I wish I would have discovered that formula earlier in life!!
