Don’t Ask For Referrals, Give ThemFeatured Wixii, Angel Tuccy, suggests that we give referrals, in order to get them: The website, LinkedIn, allows you to grow your professional network online.  It’s a valuable resource for managing your professional identity and engaging with other professionals.  Claimed to be the world’s largest professional network, professionals are still stumped on how to engage others especially when it comes to recommendations.

LinkedIn suggests that users with recommendations are three times as likely to get inquiries through LinkedIn searches.  They even go so far as to suggest that you ask your colleagues to recommend you.  This is where the modern rules of social media need to kick in.

Don’t ask for a recommendation on LinkedIn – give one.

Kindness begets kindness and when you take the time to FIRST offer a recommendation, you set a series of new actions into motion.

  1. Your activity sets a precedence that you’re not asking for something you’re not willing to do yourself.
  2. Once your colleague receives your recommendation, LinkedIn has an auto-reply system that asks your colleague to return the favor and recommend you in reply.
  3. Given the simplicity that LinkedIn offers for returning a recommendation, it’s easy for your colleague to reciprocate in the best possible situation.
  4. You have taken initiative and a leadership role in offering recommendations and therefore, you’re not asking for a favor.

If you’re wondering how to get more recommendations from your colleagues, give one.  The recommendations will follow.
