Seawell & Buckmelter, PC – 5 Tips
- Nothing good happens after midnight. To confirm what your mother always told you, curfews for your children are essential.
- Know your children’s peers. Invest yourself in making relationships with your children’s friends and their parents. Invite the kids over. When they are babies, you wouldn’t just have any sitter. As they get older, it is even more important to vet their friends. It is much easier for kids to make bad decisions in groups than individually.
- Device transparency is essential. Cyber bullying, sexting, online predators and general over-sharing, can all be very serious hazards for your children. It is imperative that you know what your kids are doing on their devices. Consider a device curfew and having access to all of their accounts.
- Substance Abuse is a real concern. While our culture seems to condone consumption of alcohol and marijuana, especially in Colorado, each substance poses significant public health concerns. In addition, underage consumption can cause life altering legal problems for your kids and potential liability for their parents who facilitate it. Don think for a minute that you are putting yourself in a good position by thinking “I would rather them drink in my house, than away from me.” The consequences can be severe – legally and financially.
- Discuss and make sure your children understand and respect appropriate physical and sexual boundaries.
