A guiding principle at Women in the Mix is “simple is not necessarily easy.” This week’s Wixii-ism: “Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple.” resonates. How often do you find yourself putting an inordinate amount of time into something that you believe should be simple? Yet, we have come to learn “simplifying” is generally not an easy task, at least the first time through. To make something simple takes thoughtful and intentional modifications.
Recently, my work-life mix has expanded to include an exciting new professional opportunity. However, this has “complicated” my existing mix on many levels. As the “work” component of my mix is expanding, it has forced me to take a hard look at my priorities and identify my non-negotiables. My first priority is to make the most of my time with my sons, which for me, means to withdraw from almost all “organized activity” (music classes, gymnastics, etc.). This was not an easy decision because I very much enjoyed the formal class structure, but I realized the time and organization required to maintain these activities was not a great fit going forward. Rather, the spontaneous opportunities for play and interaction are less stressful and more meaningful for our family. Second, I prioritize eating healthily and with minimal stress. To achieve this task, I have bitten the bullet and taken to menu-planning (a challenge for someone who does not have a natural affinity for cooking). My husband and I have enrolled in our own version of “food bootcamp” to efficiently plan and execute healthy meals. For us, that means 5-ingredients or less is our new family mantra. Family time and food have been two ways in which we have committed to simplifying family life to increase overall work-life satisfaction.
Our Featured Wixii™ this week, Mary Culver Carlile, M.D. has also taken steps to simplify; she shares, “I am most content with my decision to simplify my work so that I can have more time to devote to my husband and our life together. I fear that our time together will not be long, so I cherish every simple thing we do including sitting in the porch swing with a cup of coffee.” Mary inspires us with her dedication and achievements in her field of medicine and connection with her extended family.
